The Prisoner
With one drow captured, and the others slain, the field is quiet. Sirene takes to the sky and Kais confirms that there appear to be no reinforcements coming, and mentions that in the past dead drow have had a nasty habit of becoming their own reinforcements. On that Autun agrees and beheads the corpses. Kais and his three magical mirror images report that he found and removed the couple of dozen crossbow bolts, and the additional House Mizzrym isignia, plus a few rings and a medallion, but no poison which he finds strange, nor did they have a spell pouch, nor any additional person things. Then, Kais moves earth in order to bury the dead including the horse. Ezri calls forth the power of nature itself to coat the ground in a native ground cover. With the captured drow on the back of IJmer, and no sign of a fight behind them, the group heads back to Bogdown.
It is dawn as they return with the prisoner. As they enter the inn, the barkeep asks why they are bringing a drow into the tavern. Bree explains that with the lack of a jail in the village, Stool's Irregulars are going to keep him in custody, assigning Rocky the earth elemental keeping watch. In Kais' room, which being on the corner has light from two sides, they use Tongues to give Rocky instructions for guarding, and tie up the drow to a sturdy chair.
The Irregulars convene out of earshot. Bree suggests that a "good cop/bad cop" plan definitely works to get a captive talking. Without asking for details, the party agrees to trust her opinion. Bree fetches some bread and goes in to talk to the captive. She tries to feed him, but he refuses. She tells him in the common tongue that she needs to know why they are stealing food, and that she might be able to help him if he'll explain what they are doing. But the drow does not respond, and Bree guesses that perhaps he does not understand her words.
Bree returns to the group and tells them what happened. Next Caius, with Kais at his side, goes in and roughs him up a bit with the rapier and Vicious mockery. Watching the drow's reactions, Kais ascertains that the drow does not speak Common; Kais repeats it in Elvish. The drow tries to remain stoic and stare straight ahead, but his eye twitches slightly. Caius stares at the drow, holds up five fingers before his face and then points directly at the drow's eye, then leaves the room. Kais reaches to draw his own rapier but pauses, then shrugs, and leaves as well.
Autun and Ezri (in spider form) enter the room. Perhaps a brief flicker of hope crossed the drow's face as the giant spider entered, but then becomes deeply confused and unsettled as Ezri takes an exploratory taste of his face with her mandibles. Autun waves to the giant spider to stand down, which Ezri does, but looms with one of her large eyes very near one of the drow's. Autun pulls up a chair, and looking at his own purple cloak says in slow clear elvish, that he knows that not all drow are algined, as he once enjoyed quite a meal with the Bregan D'aerthe who took great amusement in hearing of Ilvara's misfortune. Autun states that there is a way out of this for the poor drow. Eventually, Autun succeeds in getting the captive to talk.
The drow reveals that Ilvara is trying to channel the power of Orcus, but that she seems to have been driven mad. Ilvara is trying to summon the entire House of Mizzrym here to capture a few surface dwellers for her perfect collection, a strange task which he suspects might be the undoing of the whole House. Autun exchanges some banter with the drow, including whether Ilvara is unstoppable, and more conversation flows. Autun and Ezri learn that the initial force arrived on foot, but Ilvara has been summoning the rest magically. Surprisingly, he described Ilvara as falling out of favor with Lolth after which she turned to worshipping Orcus. The drow believes that Ilvara is emptying house Mizzrym - that she probably doesn't have the power to do this, but is doing it anyway. He tells Autun that the Irregulars and the people of Bogdown do not have the forces to go against her - she's been consorting with a glazebru and bore offspring. Ilvara's demonic offspring has four arms and immeasuable powerful. The drow also mentions in passing that it was "two starved kids" who told her that she could capture her perfect collection in this direction. It became clear that the drow would like to see her stopped, because she's destroying his house, but he also described Ilvara as terrifying and perfect. The drow acknowledged that he will obey her if she gives an order.
He doesn't know precisely how many warriors there are, but there are a lot, and these warriors will strike Bogdown in days to a week. Autun asked about the cave and it is revealed that the drow only use one physical entrance. Having provided all this information, the drow hopes and asks for his freedom. Autun tells him that he cannot let him free because he would not trust him not to return to Ilvara. The drow says that he believes then that "the moon lover" (which clearly means Kais, the surface elf), will kill him. Autun says that he believes otherwise. Ezri, the spider, strokes his face, points at one of her eyes, and then leaves. Autun leaves a moment later.
A few minutes later Kais walks in looks at the drow and tells him, "if she dies, and these people are safe, I won't kill you". Autun pokes his head in and says, "I think the 'moon lover' is convinced" which seems to get the faintest smile from the prisoner.
Everyone has had a very long day, and all agree to sleep until dinner.
At dinner they start to discuss what they need to do before night falls. In the process they hear a great commotion from upstairs. The Irregulars run up to find Vulheim beating up the prisoner drow. Meanwhile Rocky sits there, impassively as he was told. Caius springs to action and is able to calm emotions of the raging Vulheim, and ushers him out into the hallway. Autun steps in, rights the chair of the drow, and gently lays hands upon the drow. The prisoner seems more in shock from the healing hands than from the assult.
Bree talks to Bandel and advises evacuating to Clamsford, a nearby town roughly twice the size of Bogdown. Bandel says he will call a meeting of the elders, and agrees that the Irregulars should be there to present what they know and what they have seen. Bree learns that an old friend who now lives in Clamsford has returned to Bogdown to visit her parents. And this old friend may be able to give some idea of what Clamsford is like now and how defensible it may be.
Kais talks to Chien Mei and learns that the books belong to Kitria, and that Kitria has been unwilling to commit Reckenmark forces to much of anything since her mother fell ill. Kais reveals to Mae that the book may be important in raising Reckenmark forces.
Bree offers to help steal the book. Caius, Kais, and Bree hatch the idea to try forging a copy. Bree then reveals that she is proficient with forgery.
Caius talks to Vulheim and tries to persuade him to call the Reckenmark forces into battle. Naturally, Vulheim doesn't want to leave the site of the most likely action. Recognizing this, Caius offers to go to Reckenmark and return with the forces for him. Vulheim thinks this is a good idea. Caius take a moment to whip-up a writ for Vulheim to sign and seal, which he does, thus approving the order.
Bree heads out on a shopping trip before meeting her olf friend at the church. She buys three sets of rare inks and a forgery kit from an old woman who dwells in a lone cottaeg in the willow grove. At the church, the village priest offers her the giant tome with the records of births and deaths as the only large book of the kind she is seeking. This causes Bree some anxiety, as Bree begins to fear that something may happen to the book.
At the church, Bree finds her old friend Friban, who is visiting Bogdown from Clamsford. The two catch up a bit and they are surprised by each other; Fribano is pregnant and Bree is a tall a magic user. Bree quizzes her about whether Clamsford has had any trouble with theft (it hasn't) and if it's defensible (no, they replaced part of the city walls with a park). When talking about shopping Fribano mentions that Waterdeep is a couple weeks' away by oxcart. Before parting, Friban asks Bree to be the godmother of her child.
Back at the inn, the Irregulars decide that replacing the book is too risky; they will leave that plan for now, especially as Caius has a writ which will serve nearly as well. Caius will talk to Mae, Bree will talk to her mum, and Autun will talk to the drow and make sure he has food and water.
