Bree of the Lightfoot and Caius are each at a tavern in Neverwinter. Bree's attention is drawn to a dragon chess piece that Caius is absentmindedly playing with. Once a helpful server in the bar points them towards a full set, they play some games. During their play they notice some unsavory characters but elect to stay out of trouble. Later they realize that their drinks have been spiked. In the seconds before they pass out they notice a white furry claw reaching otu to them.
Autun encounters Kais Foxglove as he travels through Cantos Wood while on the road to start his rite of Mielikki. They soon notice that a storm approaches and Autun invites Kais to shelter with him in a nearby cave. As they make their way to the cliffside, they pass through a clearing in which a magnificent ancient oak tree stands. Autun has occasionally made sacrifices here. As the tree comes into view, they see another traveler sheltering from the weather. It is clear to the two onlookers that lightning is about to strike, and they try to reach the traveler in time.
Ezri was traveling through Cantos Wood to find a suitable piece of wood for her final test to become a full master carpenter.When the storm approaches, she takes shelter under the biggest tree she sees. When that tree is hit by lightning, she is blindened and deafened for a few seconds, but in the end she is unharmed. As she reaches down to steady herself as she gets up she finds a long branch, still glowing at one end. As she leans on it leaves seem to sprout from the end.
As Autun and Kais reach Ezri and establish that she is miraculously unharmed, they motice hissing sounds and a stinging sensation. As the poisined darts cause them to lose consciousness, one of them catches a glimpse of a dark face, shrouded in hoods, with some white hair peeking from beneath the wrappings.
Our adventurers wake up in wagons, in chains. They are all so thirsty they must drink the spiked water. Days go by in a haze. Eventually they wake inprisoned in Velkynvelve where they meet fellow prisoners Buppido, Derendil, Eldeth, Jimjar, Ront, Sarith, Shuushar, Stool, and Topsy and Turvy. As well as the gaurd Jorlan.
