Backstory

Randall "Randy" Heafield, was born to parents of modest means on a space station mostly known for asteroid processing and chemical synthesis.

Matthew, Randy's father, a gentle but distant man, instilled in Randy a vision for how things could be better if the belt-workers and synth-workers could get more organized and get more fairly rewarded for their labor and the risks they took in their everyday work.

Not especially political herself, Kay, Randy's mother, radiated a sense of independence all could feel, and she didn't seem to ever acknowledge the existence of, much less the legitimacy of, any authority.

While quite fond of his mother, he certainly didn't take after her warm and bubbly personality, yet she instilled in him a great confidence that anything he could take apart, he could understand. Unsurprisingly he holds many lovely memories of helping her disassemble and repair all sorts of odd gear. She'd live by phrases like "if i fix the machine then it will work for me, and I'll be damned if I have to work for one" and "Cook? Surely you mean there's a bot that needs fixing."

As both his parents worked too much, and he didn't make friends easily, he was often left on his own. After his father passed from illness, Randy all but stopped attending school. In his last years of school he nearly got expelled for adding nitrous oxide to the ventilation system. The school administrators were far less angry about the effects of the laughing gas as they were about the fire which erupted in the in air scrubbers. Naturally, the fire prevention systems put it out nearly instantly, however his classmate William Bowers, who would go on to become a successful commodities broker, believed Randy nearly caused his death, and held quite a grudge.

It was also about that time that Randell met some young people from Together Forward, a political organization working to improve labor conditions, equality, safety, and full of ideals. Randy, mostly rehashing all the things his father had said over the years, impressed them with his command of their various causes, yet it was word of his discussion of the ramifications of inaction which drew special attention.

Randy wasn't recruited into the regular Together Forward party, instead he joined up with CRIA-2, a loosely affiliated, and somewhat militant, organization with a history of exposing and sabotaging illegal operations conducted by powerful actors.

Joining up with CRIA-2 gave Randy a chance to get off of that miserable space station and have a shot at making a real difference, a real impact.

His first term earned him quite a reputation, as he played key roles in some rather dangerous actions. Fortunately he managed to pull through those largely unscathed, minus a few cosmetic scars. After about five years he managed to collect the evidence to bring a massive shipping interest to its knees and halt its illegal operations, which resulted an unexpected large cash reward from a grateful contributor. A few years later, he risked his own life to ensure the safe escape of his junior mission partner, Laura Breet, forging a bond that will likely never be broken.

Over the years, Randy regularly worked with Ray Hartman from Systems and Data Analysis as operations were planned and executed. Additionally, Randy came to rely on Julia Claudet in Supply; Julia usually took responsibility to ensure the agents were outfitted with the kit they needed, if not always exactly what they wanted.

In his years with CRIA-2, he advanced steadily, recognized for his coolness under pressure, his steadfast resolve, and results-oriented prioritization. After a dozen years, he was more often planning and organizing actions than he was participating on the ground. Eventually he decided this wasn't for him. As an assistant director he found his role increasingly bogged down in the political aspects, and progressively less oriented on direct impact. He started to feel that he might as well be on Together Forward's payroll, for all the time he spent at a desk. He spent his last year in CRIA-2 ensuring that Laura Breet could run the operations, and then, stepped out so that Laura could take over his seat and he could get out from behind the desk.

It was time for him to travel.
