Before the Storm
After helping the evacuation get under way, the Irregulars confer. They decide that Autun will coordinate with IJmer, Bandel, and Vulheim. Autun will keep the scroll of protection from fiends close at hand.
Bree will coordinate with Rocky, the halfling farmers and fishermen, and outfit each of the halflings with a vile of alchemist fire. Autun provides Bree with two additional flasks of holy water, and hands her the windbag as well as the spellgem. He also pulls the philter of love from the Bag of Holding, and hands it to Bree with the comment that this potion is exceptionally potent, if only an opportunity could be found to have Ilvara or that demon offspring of hers drink it.
They await the return of Caius, for he will coordinate with Reckenmark units and of course he has the beads of fireballs and force. They expect the Reckenmark troops to set up the temple as the central garrison point.
Ezri shall coordinate with Mei and Snowy. Ezri agrees to take the scroll which can summon a gargoyle.
Kais offers to coordinate with the three halfling archers. He outfits them with the remaining five viles of alchemist fire and the four acid "grenades". Kais and the archers will report back with a plan for default dike placement.
Together with Bandel and Carlow the priest of Thaimorra, the group works out a few signals which can be used from the bell tower or from torches: singals for the four directions of attack, a signal to fallback to the temple, and a signal for full retreat. Carlow is not a combatant, but is willing to stationed at the bell and to provide first-aid support. Burren the innkeep will take on the role of quartermaster. They will transfer the drow prisoner to the temple as well.
If there is time, some additional defensive shelter will be thrown together near the fishery and the farm.
Kais tries to suss-out what sort of conditions Reckenmark had required. From Bandel, the remaining village elder, he gets the impression that they would have had to send far too many of their young folk to mandatory three year service plus an unrealistic amount of gold. Kais sees that ten people per year -- a rotating compliment of thirty of so of the most able-bodied individuals -- would leave the village unable to care for its own farms, livestock, and fisheries.
In the morning, Autun leaves early to organize the farmers and fisherman. They'll alternate between a couple hours of tactical training, and a couple hours of fortification work, with rest breaks in between. In the middle of the day they will arrange a bit of cover for people retreating towards the temple. They also ensure that the few remaining livestock are kept near the temple.
Kais and Bree are having breakfast when Ezri coming down the stairs; the three exchanges a few words, before Ezri returns upstairs. Ezri revealed that she learned that something very strange is going on at Reckenmark, maybe even the influence of demonic corruption. It seems that Kitria said something about her mother having the units do circus tricks ... there was the word "sacrifice" although the context was not too clear. The hope that Cauis is not alone facing worse than they've faced already.
A bit later Kitra comes down the stairs, her faint smile vanishing as she sees Kais approach her. Kitra proposes to that she'd be willing to commit the whole of Reckenmark forces, should Stool's Irregulars join Reckenmark for three years. Bree rolls her eyes. When the subject of the Irregulars taking orders is considered, Kais makes an analogy to going into battle armed with a "bag of cocaine soaked weasels" in an attempt to convince that letting the Irregulars do their thing would be the best choice. Kitria proposes that the Irregulars could join Reckenmark and then drum-up the support from other forces. Kais ponders this for a moment and blurts out that it doesn't sound like a good deal. Kitra, sarcasticly wishes the party best of luck without her and turns to head out. Kais, makes one last attempt to negotiate a training deal, but no deal is reached. Kais gives up on trying to rescue the negotiation, and lets her go, hoping that the rest of Reckenmark has more sense than its Sword. As the negotiation breaks down, Bree and Kitra exchange spiteful and colorful insults. Kitra walks out of the inn and with a snap of her fingers, her squire is scurrying behind her.
At dawn, from the grand balcony overlooking the Reckenmark Academy parade field, Caius addresses the gathered troops. The soldiers are to gear-up, and prepare for the forced march to Bogdown, for this is the eve of battle. a smaller contingent that Caius had hoped, ready themselves in short order. Caius, mounts his mother's warhorse, and grabs the other two warhorses in the stable for Paeliks Fredda and Saroato. In less then an hour, the force heads out, double-time. Glory awaits.
