The secrets of Mothers

We return to Bogdown after last nights sorrowful skirmish. Bree casts waterwalk to expedite our journey. Bree, carrying a small bundle that is the remains of one the towns children to their mourning parents, is not accepted by the other halflings of the town and is treated as an outsider. Mei sits in the Inn, the decade books at her side, writing her report on the events of last night. Caius attempts to influence the report in the favour of Bogdown, aiming to reduce the amount of money owed for the defences.

When Mei goes to deliver the report, Caius seizes the opportunity to try out the key discovered in the Dragonchess piece he carries with him always. The 3rd book opens with a satisfying click and he quickly pages through the massive tome, stopping for some reason to see what is remarked on the day of his birth. What he learns shocks him to his core and he is unable to deal with the world for the moment. With reckless abandon, he commits to inebriating himself as fast as possible. Mei shares in his drinking for a while, but eventually retires The truth too terrible to bear for him as a new light is cast upon his troubled past, Caius works his way into a drunken stupor and sits out the night on the roof of the tavern, back to a chimney and eyes to the stars. Kais, perhaps worried, perhaps astounded by the fact that no one is apparently keeping watch over a town besieged by drow, goes outside to look for the lost son of Reckenmark. Daybreak dawns as the discombobulated bard fails to coherently explain to Kais what is going on, though the Elf manages to piece together enough to guess. He returns Caius back to the inn and instructs him to rest and sleep of his alcoholic affliction, there is work to be done!

Breakfast is served and Autun thanks Bree for being the one to bear the fallen child to its kin, guilt still strong within him over his failure to catch the captured kid. Kais confronts Mei about the lack of guards posted in the defense of the town. Bree goes to her parents for second breakfast and is troubled by her parents ability to see her an adult. They talk about her experiences and they come to realise that she is no longer the wayward daughter that they cast out but six months earlier. When asked about her ability to perform magic, Bree speaks of her Warlock Patron, the Pseudodragon. For some reason, her mother seems to recognise it.

Back in the Inn Autun talks to Kitria, Sword of Reckenmark, and explains the situation in the Underdark. He shows the signets of the drow house Mizzrym and speaks of the abyssal corruption. Unfortunately Kitria seems unconvinced that the threat is a dire one and instead sees opportunity for Reckenmark’s coffers. Ezri the druid, impressed by the imposing figure that is the head of Reckenmark, approaches Kitria and proceeds to flirt with her. After some initial bruskness, Kitria extracts a riding crop from her boot and commands Ezri to proceed upstairs to her room. Ezri has to make a “Survival” role.

Caius dreams of collapsing caverns and the butchering of squealing piglets for some reason. Blissfully unaware of the happenings in the next room over.

Kais organizes a scouting detail with Mei and together they visit out the sites of last nights events. They manage to track some footprints and learn the routes the Drow have taken until they lose them among the reeds. When returning to the site where Mai’s beloved horse Midnight Storm was felled, the Elf uses magic to create a grave and lay the stallion to rest. Meanwhile, Autun makes his way to the nearby willow grove and finds a majestic oak tree at its heart, suffused with the splendour of Mielikki. While meditating there, he is greeted by a noble spirit that takes the form of an enormous white moose - it's antlers tangled in the dense growth - that offers to ally with Autun as his Noble Steed. When the paladin helps to free the majestic creature, the pair turns to leave. Then, a disembodied voice impresses upon Autun that he must “Unsheath the Sword”. Autun responds by raising Dawnbringer and merging its sunlight with that of the bright star above. The voices laughs in divine delight in amusement at being misunderstood.

Autun leads the moose back to the town and introduces his new companion to the group.

The Irregulars' proceed to plan a patrol for the evening with Bandel, the Captain of the Guard for the halfling town of Bogdown. Ezri and Caius take the first watch. Kais, Autun, not-Honk and Rocky take the second watch. Kais and Mei are next, followed by Bree and Bandel. Though nothing is encountered during the night, words are exchanged as each one of the Irregulars comes to grip with the life outside the endless caves below.
