Bree of the Lightfoot and Caius are each at a tavern in Neverwinter. Bree's attention is drawn to a dragon chess piece that Caius is absentmindedly playing with. Once a helpful server in the bar points them towards a full set, they play some games. During their play they notice some unsavory characters but elect to stay out of trouble. Later they realize that their drinks have been spiked. In the seconds before they pass out they notice a white furry claw reaching otu to them.
Autun encounters Kais Foxglove as he travels through Cantos Wood while on the road to start his rite of Mielikki. They soon notice that a storm approaches and Autun invites Kais to shelter with him in a nearby cave. As they make their way to the cliffside, they pass through a clearing in which a magnificent ancient oak tree stands. Autun has occasionally made sacrifices here. As the tree comes into view, they see another traveler sheltering from the weather. It is clear to the two onlookers that lightning is about to strike, and they try to reach the traveler in time.
Ezri was traveling through Cantos Wood to find a suitable piece of wood for her final test to become a full master carpenter. When the storm approaches, she takes shelter under the biggest tree she sees. When that tree is hit by lightning, she is blindened and deafened for a few seconds, but in the end she is unharmed. As she reaches down to steady herself as she gets up she finds a long branch, still glowing at one end. As she leans on it leaves seem to sprout from the end.
As Autun and Kais reach Ezri and establish that she is miraculously unharmed, they notice hissing sounds and a stinging sensation. As the poisoned darts cause them to lose consciousness, one of them catches a glimpse of a dark face, shrouded in hoods, with some white hair peeking from beneath the wrappings.
Our adventurers wake up in wagons, in chains. They are all so thirsty they must drink the spiked water. Days go by in a haze. Eventually they wake imprisoned in Velkynvelve where they meet fellow prisoners Buppido, Derendil, Eldeth, Jimjar, Ront, Sarith, Shuushar, Stool, and Topsy and Turvy. As well as the guard Jorlan, a heavily scarred Drow warrior.
Soon, the party is split up into work details with the NPCs, entering a three-shift rotation. All work assigned to them is mindnumbing, and some of it is outright busywork, like the repeated uncoiling and coiling of ropes.
Among their fellow prisoners, there is unrest as well. When Ront steals Stool's portion of the food, Autun is quick to intervene. With the orc subdued, Kais takes the little myconid aside and asks if he really has need of all of his food. After pointing out that Ront is much bigger than them, and may need more food to get by, Stool volunteers half his portion.
After several days of careful observation, the party has learned some of the layout of the outpost and concludes that the scarred Drow guard used to hold more authority than he does, and that the current lieutenant (who serves, in Stool's words "The Mean One") likes to rub this in his face. At some point, both the lieutenant and "The Mean One" can be seen observing Jorlan from a distance as he feeds the prisoners. During a later visit, Jorlan exchanges handshakes with Kais and Jimjar and, after eliciting a response from them, tells a confusing story to a nearby quaggoth.
Kais concludes from this that Jorlan may have a way to release the prisoners, though no one can guess at the motives of the guard.
Once the adventurers and their fellow prisoners agree to Jorlan's plan, he gives them a time frame during which he will give a signal. The next time they see the guard again, the appointed moment has not yet arrived, but a strange, buzzing sound has echoed through the cavern for some time. Agitated and concerned, the Drow opens the door to the prison, instructing the prisoners that the plan has changed and they should leave this instant.
