			Soon, the party is split up into work details with the NPCs, entering a three-shift rotation. All work assigned to them is mindnumbing, and some of it is outright busywork, like the repeated uncoiling and coiling of ropes.

			Among their fellow prisoners, there is unrest as well. When Ront steals Stool's portion of the food, Autun is quick to intervene. With the orc subdued, Kais takes the little myconid aside and asks if he really has need of all of his food. After pointing out that Ront is much bigger than them, and may need more food to get by, Stool volunteers half his portion.

			After several days of careful observation, the party has learned some of the layout of the outpost and concludes that the scarred Drow guard used to hold more authority than he does, and that the current lieutenant (who serves, in Stool's words "The Mean One") likes to rub this in his face. At some point, both the lieutenant and "The Mean One" can be seen observing Jorlan from a distance as he feeds the prisoners. During a later visit, Jorlan exchanges handshakes with Kais and Jimjar and, after eliciting a response from them, tells a confusing story to a nearby quaggoth.

Bree's attention is drawn to a dragon chess piece that Caius is absentmindedly playing with. Once a helpful server in the bar points them towards a full set, they play some games. During their play they notice some unsavory characters but elect to stay out of trouble. Later they realize that their drinks have been spiked. In the seconds before they pass out they notice a white furry claw reaching otu to them.

As the tree comes into view, they see another traveler sheltering from the weather. It is clear to the two onlookers that lightning is about to strike, and they try to reach the traveler in time.
